In Grid Mode, previews are not displayed for some child sites. The sites run on different hosting providers and have different technical stacks. The child sites are successfully connected.
What could be the cause of this? Where can I start looking?

These screenshots come from Automattic’s mShots service. It’s possible that their service is unable to generate the screenshot for some reason.
Pick one affected child’s site domain (example: example.com), then open this in a browser: https://s0.wp.com/mshots/v1/example.com
If that URL is blank, errors, or never produces a screenshot, then the issue is outside MainWP.
